Full Text: Dedicated Systems Experts, a company specializing in the verification and validation of real-time and embedded systems, announces the availability of a layman's view on Embedded Systems. The report has been sponsored by the European Commission.
The report gives an accurate detailed definition, description and characterisation of Embedded Systems and its borders from both technological and functional point of view, bearing in mind the need to revise and re-evaluate current ICT indicators and statistics.
To better understand the actual and future situation of embedded systems, the report starts with a short overview of embedded systems' history. It then discusses the definitions of embedded systems and its technical and functional characteristics one can find in literature.
Embedded Systems are finally subdivided in 3 categories depending on the most important driver: cost, safety critical and high availability. Today, research is oriented towards these main areas and the author is convinced that this is also an excellent criterion for subdivision.
