Full Text:
The Embedded Masterclass is a combination of technical workshops, presentations of leading edge technology and an exhibition of many of the world´s leading vendors of tools and technologies for the development of `embedded systems´. Such embedded systems include mobile phones, SatNavs, medical equipment, automotive control systems, air traffic control systems and even washing machines and microwaves.

“The term `embedded´ comes from the fact that there is a microprocessor `embedded´ in the circuitry of these types of systems,” said Richard Blackburn, the organiser of the event. “The UK is a world leader in this field and this event gives engineers the chance to learn about the new tools and technologies that are available to help them develop their next range of products. It´s also a chance for them to chat with leaders in specific field. In this respect, we have presenters flying in from as far away as Canada and the US.”

Topics for this year´s event include the development of `user interfaces´ and the new technologies that help engineers to create products with a sharper `look and feel´. Also, along similar lines will be a presentation on the latest 3D computer aided design software and how it is enabling engineers to be more innovative with enclosure design and leading to the development of products with a more innovative appearance and method of operation.

Other workshops and presentations will include an introduction to using the Linux operating system in the `embedded´ environment and how `data´ can be effectively managed in complex, data centric devices.

“Our objective is always to create an event that offers `answers´, said Richard Blackburn. “Embedded engineers are highly educated professionals whose time is precious, so we make every effort to make sure their visit to the event is enjoyable and productive. This year, we think we´ve excelled ourselves. Workshops such as the `Software Timing Analysis´ workshop is a great opportunity for any engineers working with mission critical software to come along and learn from one of the world´s leading experts in this field. Whether it´s a car braking system, a heart monitor or a nuclear power plant control system, knowing how long complex software takes to do a task is often difficult to assess but essential for a reliable performance. It´s this quality of workshop that I think is attractive to the delegates at the event.”

Exhibitors and presenters at this year´s event include US companies MontaVista, Wind River and Greenhills, Canadian companies Tilcon and QNX, German tool company Lauterbach and UK companies SDC Systems, Innova Systems and Barric.

“It´s our favourite event of the year,´ said Stuart Parker of SDC Systems Ltd. “We focus on providing tools and technologies that accelerate development and provide innovative functionality. We also provide engineering services to help companies with their embedded systems development. The Embedded Masterclass gives us a chance to communicate our newer technologies; this event is always an enjoyable and productive day for us and the delegates who attend. This year´s Embedded Masterclass is shaping up to be an exciting event, we are looking forward to it.”

The Embedded Masterclass, including the main room agenda of technical presentations, is free to engineers and technical managers. The workshops are subject to a modest charge
