If you are a hi-tech engineer, then you probably know what a GUI is. For the rest of us it is a Graphical User Interface. It is the screen that welcomes you at the 'cash point', it is the screen that shows you where to go on your 'SatNav' and it may even be the small LCD panel on your microwave. GUI's are all around us. We live in a GUI driven world.

This year's hi-tech developer's event, The Embedded Masterclass (http://www.embedded-masterclass.com) offers engineers the opportunity to learn 'all things GUI'. This year's event offers a 'GUI Development Workshop' as well has the chance to meet several of the worlds leading providers of GUI development tools. The Embedded Masterclass is to take place at Cambridge on May 7th and near Bristol on May 12th.

"For embedded systems developers, the GUI is a big deal," said Richard Blackburn, the event organiser. "It is the part of the development process that directly impacts the user´s visual impression of the product and the way it is operated. It really is the connection between the man and the machine, in fact many engineers call it the 'human machine interface (HMI)´. It is absolutely critical to a product's success in the marketplace."

The GUI development workshop is to be presented by Canadian engineer Martin Cote who holds a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and has many years of experience in the field of embedded graphics design. Martin began his career as a graphics developer on the Tilcon Embedded Vector Engine, providing cutting edge graphics to embedded platforms. Vendors such as SDC Systems, QNX and Wind River will be exhibiting a range of GUI technologies, offering products suitable for such industries as medical systems, mobile phones, military equipment, automotive and point of sale equipment.

"It should make for a more colourful show!" said Richard. "Normally the focus is on the microprocessor and software, which can be a little mundane at times. I think we will have some impressive demonstrations and a lot of exciting new technologies and capabilities. I understand QNX are bringing an entire car dash board resulting from work they have been doing with a major automotive company."

SDC Systems will be exhibiting a range of GUI tools and software. They are currently resellers for Tilcon, ALT Software and Quantum-3D, which offer some of the world's most powerful GUI development packages. SDC have become a leading UK expert in the development of GUI's for embedded systems, offering both products and services to assist technology companies in their development process.

"We have several exciting new technologies to demonstrate, so we are very much looking forward to this year's event," said Stuart Parker, Managing Director of SDC Systems. "GUI development is an increasingly important part of what embedded engineers do, so it's good to have this opportunity to focus on this side of things and give engineers the chance to learn about what tools and software are available to them. The Embedded Masterclass is always an enjoyable event and this year it is shaping up to be better than ever."

The Embedded Masterclass is 'free' to engineers and technology managers but prior registration via their website www.embedded-masterclass.com is required as space is limited. Teas, Coffee and a buffet are provided. The various 1/2 day workshops carry a charge of £95.00 + vat. There remain a few exhibition spaces available at the Cambridge venue for any companies that wish to exhibit. The Bristol exhibition space is now fully allocated.

About the Embedded Masterclass
Over the past 9 years, the Embedded Masterclass has established itself as an important UK event for engineers looking to explore the most recent tools and technologies for the development of embedded systems. Over the years it has grown from a small seminar into a much larger event that now includes a tabletop exhibition, an agenda of technical presentations and a collection of high quality workshops. It attracts electronics engineers, embedded computing engineers, designers and project managers, giving them the chance to meet with engineers from many of the world's leading vendors of development tools and realtime and embedded technologies. The Embedded Masterclass is recognised for the quality of its presentations, which are technical in content and presented by experienced and knowledgeable engineers. It's free to engineers and managers in the technology sector, although the workshop carries a small charge.
