Summary: Over 150 developers of hi-tech systems attended this year's Embedded Masterclass, an event that introduces engineers to new technologies and tools for the development of hi-tech systems. This event was held in both Cambridge and Bristol and included technical workshops, technical presentations and a vendor exhibition.
Full Text: This year's event was the 9th Embedded Masterclass and this key industry event has grown once again on the previous year, with more exhibitors, more workshops and a larger Cambridge venue. Engineers from across the UK, Ireland, France, Spain and Sweden attended to learn new skills and explore what new technologies are available for future projects.
"Feedback from the delegates has been very flattering," said Richard Blackburn of Energi Technical Marketing, the event organiser. "The delegates really valued the content and the quality of the workshops and the presentaions. One engineer even said that it restored his faith in the such events and he will bring some colleagues along next year. This very much confirmed our belief that engineers want to attend shows that prove to be worthwhile and productive; such an event needs to be an experience that contributes to their work effort and isn't just time away from their desk."
Some highlights of the event include an embedded Linux workshop, a GUI development workshop, fast booting Linux, a developers guide to Zigbee and Wifi hardware, a software timing analysis workshop, a guide to using 3D CAD for enclosure design and an insight into the latest thinking behind software version control. Exhibitors at the event included SDC Systems, Innova Systems, Wind River, QNX, IBM, Intel, Solid State Solutions, Geopel, Lauterbach and Nohau.
"This is our favourite event of the year," said Peter Heyes, Sales Director at SDC Systems. "It's a great forum for us to introduce our latest embedded systems technologies to professional engineers and to learn about what challenges engineers are facing and what type of tools and software they require from vendors such as ourselves. We like the fact that this event focuses on the technical rather than the sales side of things. It gives us more of a chance to demonstrate our understanding of this technology and the service that we offer."
The Embedded Masterclass is a one day event that is replicated in both Cambridge and Bristol. The decision to run the same event in two locations was in order to minimise the amount of time that engineers would need to travel to the event. The success of this approach has encouraged the organisers to consider three or four locations for 2010.
"The main ethos behind the event is that engineers are busy people who work under a lot of pressure much of the time. In this respect, we want to make it as easy for them to attend as possible," said Richard Blackburn. "In many ways, we are simply taking the technology to them, rather than asking them to come to us. And when they arrive, we try to make it as productive a day for them as possible."
The organisers have several new ideas for 2010 that they think will help the event go even further in its quest to provide engineers with a truly rewarding and productive experience. http://www.embedded-masterclass.com
