With Windows CE 2.0, Microsoft officialised the major role they want to play in the dedicated systems industry. Although one may argument that release 2.0 is not really suitable for hard real-time systems, Microsoft plans to add hard real-time features to Windows CE 3.0, availability foreseen in 1999. Real-Time Magazine decided to monitor closely Windows CE, not only because it has been and still is a hot topic on the relevant newsgroups, but - more important - because we feel that Microsoft, with release 3.0 of Windows CE, may come up with a solid alternative for many commercial RTOS available today.
