ANSI: American National Standards Institute
ANSI is a voluntary organization founded in 1918.
ANSI performs 3 major types of functions.

ANSI approves standards and accredits standard development groups &
certification programs. ANSI does not itself develop standards. They use
- Professional societies, such as IEEE
- Committees formed for the exclusive purpose of developing standards, such
as X3
- Groups accredited by ANSI to use the canvas method to develop standards.

- Professional societies, such as IEEE
- ANSI represent and coordinate US interests in international, non treaty, and non governmental standards bodies.
- ANSI provides information about national, international, and foreign national standards.
