Editorial 1Q96
A fool with a tool is an even bigger fool, but as we are no fools, we are looking for bigger tools
Therefore, I wanted to devote this issue to an overview of the CASE tools
commonly used in the development of Real-Time Systems. But where are the
bigger tools? A lot of CASE tools vendors didn't react at all to our proposal
or provided us with low quality submission
We can see a few reasons for this:
- their product is not sufficiently used in Real-Time environments
- their product has not yet reached the necessary quality
- the CASE tools vendors do not see the need for promotion
- Real-Time people are not asking for CASE tools (yet?)
Of course, it will not be one of these reasons but a good cocktail of all
of them. Thus I decided to accept contributions not only from CASE tool vendors,
but from development tool vendors in general. We will probably have to wait
for another 2 years before we can produce a real CASE tool
issue.
Greater news is the fact that Real-Time Consult, the company which owns and
produces this magazine is expanding its activities.
Today Real-Time
Consult is headquartering the
GRoupIPC.
You can read all about it on the frontpage of the Real-Time Gazette. With
this activity we will tighten up again our relationship with the board
manufacturers. Real-Time Magazine is concentrating more and more on software
and software development procedures. The
GRoupIPC publication, called
MEZZANINES, concentrates
on (mezzanine) board products and is therefore very complementary to Real-Time
Magazine. The aim is to promote the good and extensive use of PMC modules
as THE mezzanine standard for the future (do you doubt?).
The biggest news is that we have been in the Real-Time Publishing
business for 10 years already.
We therefore decided that we had to mark this first decade by a major
step towards new publishing technologies. Two new products will be
launched:
the first one available today is a WWW server, called Real-Time
Encyclopaedia
We will work hard to get together all possible QUALIFIED information about
Real-Time technologies, products, and markets presented towards the
field engineers and product sales force. You can reach us now on
http://www.dedicated-systems.com. But as it might be very time-consuming to consult
this large WEB site, we are thinking about publishing all this information
on CD-ROM on a periodic basis. Do not expect too muchin the beginning.
It will take several years to put together all that we want to collect
about the Real-Time world, but Rome was not constructed in one day
either......
Start surfing now, and give us some input about what kind of information
you want us to publish first.
Dr
Martin Timmerman.
