TRACE32 extends its LynxOS Support to LynxOS-178

LAUTERBACH, the leading manufacturer of microprocessor development tools, announced recently that it now offers kernel awareness for the real time operating system LynxOS-178 from LynuxWorks, Inc. LynxOS-178 is a hard real-time, POSIX conformant OS, that is certifiable by DO-178B level A. Customers of TRACE32 receive the LynxOS-178 Awareness for free, as usual.

In safety sensitive systems, such as avionics, it is required to certify the software by the standard DO-178B, to ensure proper operation without critical faults. Each software component used must be certified. LynxOS-178 is a special version of LynxOS that targets these systems. It encapsulates critical software and decouples it from unsafe software by providing “virtual machines”, which are strongly separated.

Especially in such safety critical applications, you need the ability to debug the system in its completeness. Lauterbach now extended its LynxOS awareness, which was already available for LynxOS versions 3.1 and 4.0, to the LynxOS-178 derivative. The TRACE32 debugger provides special features for the “virtual machine” layout of this OS. The displays of processes and threads show, to which VM they belong. The complete MMU support of TRACE32 allows debugging several processes in several VMs, all at once. A special symbol handling provides the ability to debug even two instantiations of the same process in different VMs.

All features of the TRACE32 Debugger for LynxOS-178 don´t need any changes to the application or kernel like patches, hooks or additional instrumentation in the code. This allows debugging on exactly the same application as on the final product, which is necessary for certification. This is the only way to guarantee, 100 percent that the original application is tested and will run correctly.
